CITGO RACING'S SALT LAKE CITY
RACE REPORT
CITGO Racing in Lead and Top Five Until 9th Hour Mechanical Failure
September 3, 2006, Los Angeles, CA...The trio of Milka Duno, Marc Goossens
and Stefan Johansson were well on their way to a podium finish - with
a very
real chance at a win - when an 9th hour mechanical failure with less
than 30
minutes left in the race caused a 16th place finish at the season finale
today at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City, Utah. The nine
hour
competition marked the season's end for the 2006 Rolex Sports Car Series
Championship.
The #11 CITGO Pontiac Riley was in the top ten for every lap of it's
race -
in the top five for most - and twice in the lead - before a driveline
failure forced the car into the pits and out of the race on lap 182
of the
193-lap competition.
Milka Duno
"We were so very close and everything was going so well toward a podium-
it
would have been a great finish for the season. We had a great car and
everyone was working so very hard - it's a shame we had a problem so
close
to the end. My thanks for Marc, Stefan and the whole CITGO Racing crew
for
their very strong effort."
Marc Goossens
"It was a good race in general. I think we knew for a couple of days
that we
had a good car. It's just a shame we couldn't get more out of it in
qualifying, but during the race, we were running pretty well. All the
guys
did a great job with the pitstops and it was pretty
good until 20 minutes from the end when the gearbox broke. As long
as you
don't have any drive, then you're not going anywhere. Luckily, I made
it
back to the pits, but unfortunately, the guys couldn't do anything
about it.
All in all, we had a good run. It's a shame it happened 20 minutes
from the
end. We were up front for most of the race and I think the whole CITGO
team
did a great job."
Stefan Johansson
"It was a pity we couldn't finish the race. It was looking very promising
halfway through, but that's what sports-car racing is all about --
you've
just got to keep it all together until the end. But we're still happy
with
our performance. I think everybody did the best we
could today and the car was performing well, so that's all we can do."
