CITGO RACING'S DAYTONA RACE REPORT
Duno Punted from Behind, CITGO Racing Out on Lap Two
June 29, 2006, Los Angeles, CA...Milka Duno, Stefan Johansson and the
CITGO
Racing team's Daytona effort ended very prematurely when their #11 CITGO
Pontiac Riley was forcefully punted from behind - on lap 2 - at this
evening's Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway. After
good
results in the two practice session leading up to this evening's race
both
the drivers and crew were hopeful for at least a top-ten finish - but
luck
was simply not on their side.
The grid for the 70-lap summer classic was determined by team points
and
Milka started in the 8th row and in the 15th position. On lap 2, at
turn 3,
Milka was hit very hard from behind and sent - literally - on top of
the car
in front of her. Thankfully, Duno climbed from the car unhurt but very
disappointed. The damage to the car was serious - requiring a tow to
the
team's garage. The car had suffered a race-ending broken right- rear
suspension and was officially retired on lap 21.
Milka Duno
"Luck has just not been on our side for the last few races. We
come to each
race very prepared and with a great car - and with a very real chance
for
great results. But for one reason or another - like tonight - something
happens that no amount of skill, experience or preparation can overcome.
You
simply cannot win a race without a little bit of luck. I feel bad for
the
team who work exceptionally hard all the time, and for Stefan - who
didn't
even get in the car."
Stefan Johansson
"It's obviously very disappointing to be out this early in the
race. I think
we would have had a reasonably good chance today; the car was good in
the
practice. It's just always disappointing when you drop out this early."
After two races in six days, Milka and the CITGO Racing team will get
a much
deserved break from race action. Their next Rolex Sports Car Series
competition will be a month away at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham,
Alabama July 28-30, 2006.
